Ruba Nadda is a critically acclaimed Canadian filmmaker. In her career, Ruba has made 2 feature films (Sabah 2005, Cairo Time 2009) and 13 short films Aadan, Blue Turning Grey Over You, Black September, I Would Suffer Cold Hands For You, Laila, Slut, Damascus Nights, The Wind Blows Towards Me Particularly, So Far Gone, Do Nothing, Wet Heat Drifts Through The Afternoon, Interstate Love Story, Lost Woman Story). Her films have been shown over 500 times in Film Festivals around the world with more than 30 retrospectives of her work.
Cairo Time (starring Patricia Clarkson & Alexander Siddig 2009) had its worldwide premiere as a Special Presentation at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival where it was awarded Best Canadian Feature Film. It had its U.S. theatrical release (by IFC) in August 2010 to critical and commercial success, eventually being named Rotten Tomatoes' best reviewed film (Romance) of 2010.
In consideration of her achievements, Ruba Nadda is receiving TheWIFTS Foundation Best Director Award 2011.
Born in Montreal, Quebec to a Syrian father and Palestinian mother, Ruba spent most of her childhood on the move, living all over Canada and Damascus, Syria before finally settling in Toronto, Ontario. She studied English Literature at York University and then completed the summer program at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. In the summer of 1996, she returned to Toronto and started making short films.
While living in Syria Ruba at the age of 14 fell in love with telling stories.
Through a combination of isolation and culture shock, a passionate need to connect through storytelling was born. Stuck with her sister in Damascus, it was there that her love of reading classics turned into writing short stories to entertain her sister. This became the fuel that would drive her passion for filmmaking. Her short stories have been published in numerous journals and publications, but it wasn't until she worked in the box office of TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) in 1995 that she realized that she wanted to be a filmmaker. It was a way to bring her short stories to life.
Ruba will be going into production this coming January (2012) on her next feature film, a thriller called Inescapable with Daniel Iron and Christine Vachon as producers.
