Sarah "Sally" Goodrich Co-Founder The Peter M. Goodrich Memorial Foundation
On September 11, 2001, Sally Goodrich's oldest son, Peter, was a passenger on United flight 175 when it was hijacked and flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
In October 2001, Sally co-founded Families of September 11, which was established to raise awareness about the effects of terrorism and public trauma and to champion domestic and international policies to prevent, protect against, and respond to terrorist acts.
To mark the third anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, Sally, a life-long educator, initiated a "One Day's Pay" project with schools in and around the Berkshires, MA where she spent over a decade as the Title I Coordinator for the North Adams Public Schools.
The project was a result of an email she received from one of Peter's friends, serving with the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, about a dedicated Afghan teacher with a curious and open outlook who was teaching girls under extremely difficult conditions in a rural province. Within months, what began modestly as collecting supplies for this teacher inspired Sally to further Afghan education and build a school."
In 2004, Sally and her husband co-founded the Peter M. Goodrich Memorial Foundation, which works primarily in the Pashtun provinces of Afghanistan to support education and address the fundamental needs of fragile populations.
Until her death in December 2010, Sally directed the work of the Foundation. This included building a school for 520 girls in Logar Province and digging a deep-water well and reservoir in Kunar Province. The school building in Logar was completed and donated to the government of Afghanistan in April 2006. The Foundation continues to support this school, provide on-going funding to two schools and over 50 orphans in Wardak Province, and support some portion of the high school and college education of 15 Afghan exchange students in the United States.
Sally traveled to Afghanistan eight times, coming to know and deeply admire the people of that country. She spoke often at U.S. schools, colleges, places of worship and community centers about Afghanistan and engaged American students in Afghan service projects.
In 2009 Sally received an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. In 2007 the Northern Berkshire Massachusetts Coalition awarded Sally and her husband the Martin Luther King Peacemaker Award. Sally was the 2006 recipient of the North Berkshire Business and Professional Women's "Woman of Achievement Award. She was featured on NPR, in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, in "O" Magazine, and in August 2005 she was named ABC News' "Person of the Week".
A 1967 graduate of the University of Vermont, Sally held a Masters of Education from Boston University and an Educational Specialist degree in Language and Literacy from Simmons College. She was the Title I Coordinator in the North Adams Public Schools, North Adams, MA, a Reading Specialist and a former reading teacher in Bennington, VT. Sally volunteered in various capacities for the International Dyslexia Association. Sally was the mother of two surviving children, grandparent of five, and the host mother to many Afghan students, all of whom brightened her home in Bennington, VT.
