Francesca Casilli is a young director currently living in Florence, Italy. Though she may be Italian by nationality she spent most of her life in Zambia. In 2008 she directed her first short film, "Notes to Heaven," which aimed to bring together individuals in Florence. The film premiered at the Florence International Film Festival soon after it's completion. She is now beginning her second project which aims to further uncover the human condition, the central topic of her thesis and creative muse.
This short film is an expose on grief: living with it and overcoming it. The documentary focuses on a series of interviews with six individuals who had experienced a form of grief. Each candidate was asked to write a letter to person they had lost. A public event was organized to bring together people who had experienced grief, allowing them to write their own letters and these were then tied to balloons. And on the only sunny day in December 2008 a group, much larger than the original six, joined together to watch the sixty red balloons vanish from sight.
My film aims to enhance a facet of the human condition. By exploring our human fear of death and mortality we may attempt to grow in our understanding of those around us as well as ourselves. The interviews display the many aspects of grief as each candidate shows a different method of coping, different spiritual beliefs, different emotions and different levels of recovery. As humans, afraid of mortality, we constantly shield ourselves from the reality of death. "Notes to Heaven," captures the essence of unexplainable human thought and human ability.
