The Chef’s Letter is Sybil Mair’s second short film. Having studied French and German language and literature, Sybil’s professional background is in translating. After running a successful private translating business for several years, she wrote Honey and Sting. Honey and Sting has played at several festivals world-wide, has received a number of awards and nominations. The film continues to be screened.
A successful chef lives his life as he runs his kitchen, but his regime of order and control is shaken when he falls in love with a young male trainee. At the last moment, he decides to make his feelings known, and so writes the letter that could promise his release but could also destroy his ordered life.
Observing what’s not been said as much as what is said interests me. The obstacles to communication people confront in balance with how they resolve to search for meaning. I wanted to make a film about vulnerability and fear of the unknown as well as to examine the struggle between control over oneself and the vulnerability that love brings.
