Renée Rutgrink (The Debt Collector)
About Renée Rutgrink
Writer - Director

Renée Rutgrink completed her law degree and decided rather than be a lawyer, she would experiment in filmmaking. She completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Film and Television in documentary at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne Australia. She moved to Denmark in 2006 because she was a little in love with Scandinavian film. She works freelance in the Danish film industry, mostly at Zentropa Productions in post production. Debt Collector is her first fiction film.

Synopsis
Daniel spends his working hours bound to a telephone line demanding people repay their debts. In his private life, he dances Argentianian tango. His challenge is to reconcile these two very different worlds – one of connection in the passionate moment of dance, and the other world of disconnection, miscommunication and frustration he feels trapped in. Susanne, a single mother, in a tight financial situation is one of the clients of the credit society Daniel works for. She also dances tango. When Daniel encounters her, he is finally able to find his courage and direction in life.

Notes from the Director
Debt Collector is a simple film about connection. I had two aims in making the film. The first was to experiment in creating intense pictures, and the dance scenes were crucial to me, in that they be shot a certain way, with emphasis on the bodily contact between the actors and their emotional interaction, rather than the dancing itself. Secondly, I wanted to make a film with heart with a simple message that there is redemption in human connection. The motif of the telephone is an important one, standing for miscommunication. The film explores other ways of communication, ways of being, and seeks to illustrate that real connection with others is always at our fingertips, however disillusioned we are and however cold the outside world may seem. The biggest moments in life are the little ones of connection with others.
