Emma Rozanski came to filmmaking from the stage and a drama degree at the Queensland University of Technology. The Whisper Stop, her debut, won Best Drama & Best Overall Film at the Poppy Jasper Film Festival in California, and graced many festivals around the globe. 2009 will see Emma accompanying The Storymaker at Festivals the world over. Also a director of music clips, she is busy writing the feature Blocks.
The Storymaker is a dark fable about a woman who kills herself with her imagination. Unfolding over the last day in her life, this window into her world tells of an age of imagining, where society outside is reliant on her mind to fill a void. A sinister allegory of creative freedom versus a commercial arts industry, The Storymaker examines the role of artist and audience within a culture of exploitation
This film was born out of a daydream and the frustration of what I saw was an imbalance of ‘business’ versus creativity in the film industry around me. I wanted the challenge of exploring a fantasy world, while telling an allegory of the possible repercussions when stifling creative invention in favour of middle-of-the-road fare. There are many layers to the film that can be understood on face value as a strange literal story, or as a metaphor for artistic creation, compromise and control. I hope that audiences will be drawn into interesting thoughts and feelings while watching the film and feel challenged by the experience.
