RAG TALE chronicles a week in the life of a tabloid newspaper in contemporary London. Its tyrannical chairman and obsequious editor battle for political supremacy, using staff journalists as pawns in the power games they play out in the pages of the press.
At the official weekly editorial meeting for THE RAG, the same question always rears its ugly head: ‘Who are we going to get this week?’ And in response to the predictable roll call of proposals, always the same jokes, and all of course, are in the worst possible taste.
The more heated’ unofficial weekly meeting takes place in the privacy of the relaxation room between The Editor and his deputy, who also happens to be the Chairman’s wife. Surely, it’s more than an Editor’s job is worth to continue such an affair? The story could of course break. Playing straight into the hands of the Chairman’s grand scheme to initiate an ‘about turn’ on paper policy, promote his wife to editor and receive a knighthood in the process, the Editor appears to be at his mercy.
In order to counter the Chairman’s axe and to save his job, the Editor sets about conjuring a cunning campaign of his own. His tabloid integrity, ‘not an ironic contradiction in terms’, is to be crucified at the cross of his chairman’s aristocratic ambitions.
With his usual armoury of conventional scoops, ‘drug stings’ and sex scandals run bare in his newspaper, the Editor of THE RAG decides upon designing a more complex fraudulent revelation. Let the games begin!
