“Tapestries of Hope” follows filmmaker and advocate Michealene Cristini Risley to Zimbabwe to document the human rights work of activist Betty Makoni and the Girl Child Network, exposing an issue that continues to be ignored: the rape and sexual abuse of thousands of young girls as a purported “cure” for HIV/AIDS.
Amid spiraling poverty and political corruption, Zimbabwe has become one of the highest HIV/AIDS-infected countries in the world. In a fatal but little discussed exacerbation of the problem, traditional healers have been counseling men that they can cure the disease by raping a virgin.
“Tapestries” tells heartbreaking stories while documenting how GCN has helped survivors find their voices and speak of the atrocities committed against them. Something very special happens as we get to know these girls: we witness their resilience, their openness to healing and the laughter that makes this all possible. It is their courage and willingness to walk the journey from pain to recovery that weaves the “Tapestries of Hope” highlighted here.
